Do drivers need to be approved?
To help promote the safety of all our riders, drivers must submit an application for approval before they can take the driver’s seat. If you’re an existing rider and want to volunteer to drive, visit your profile to start the application process.
- Process:
- Each driver’s MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) will be checked annually & 5 days prior to license expiration.
- Qualifications:
- Valid driver's driver’s license
- 25 years of age or older*.
- No more than 2 moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the previous three years.
- No more than 4 moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the previous five years.
- No major driving convictions in the past five years (i.e. driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while impaired, failure to stop and report an accident, driving while license is suspended or revoked, possession of drugs or open containers of alcoholic beverage, reckless driving and/or participating in a speed contest, drag or highway race, or attempting to elude authorities).
- Be licensed a minimum of five years in the United States.
- Meet and comply with any laws/criteria required by the state where the vanpool is operated (i.e. medical requirements, drug screen).
- Hawaii Drivers: applicants with a Hawai Driver's license will be required to validate their license with their local Commute team during the approval process.
- Active Military Drivers: if you are deployed out of state with expired license due to deployment, an active military ID may be required during the approval process. Varies by state.
- Michigan and New York Drivers: the minimum age requirement is 18*
*Significant restrictions and surcharges apply to drivers who are less than 25 years old. Contact your local Commute location for more details.
